..said Dr. Pat O'Neill. Many Chiropractors decide on this career due to miraculous results with their own health. That wasn't the case with me (although I have had excellent results from care over the years).
When I was in High School and trying to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up, some friends that I played basketball with had their father come speak at Career Day in school. He happened to be achiropractor, and when he explained the natural approach to healing thatChiropractic takes, something just "clicked" with me. It was so simple, but it made so much sense. I had always been fascinated with how the human body worked and wanted to do something where I could help a lot of people, and in chiropractic, I saw the perfect combination.About that same time, my older brother (in college at the time), became disillusioned with electrical engineering, switched to Pre-Chiropractic as a major and started Chiropractic school himself. As I began to study it more and became a patient myself, it became clear to me that this was what I wanted to do with my life. After finishing my prerequisites (lots of biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy), I began Sherman Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC in 1985. After an intense four years of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, x-ray and technique classes, I graduated in 1989 at age 23 and started practice. I practiced in Sumter, SC for 3+ years, and then decided to move to Charleston to open my own practice. I've been serving the people of the North Charleston area since 1992.
My goal with patients is to help them achieve the highest level of health possible for them. I like to look at the "whole person" and not just their symptoms. To me, getting people out of pain has always been the easy part. Having them reach optimal health and wellness, I believe, is a much more worthy goal. In addition to giving patients the best Chiropractic care available, I educate patients about nutrition, exercise, clean water and air, stress reduction, reducing their use of drugs and surgery as much as possible and having a positive mental outlook. I believe you must address all these factors to be truly healthy. The most satisfaction I get is when I have a patient gets out of pain and continues to come to stay truly healthy and brings their family in to do the same. I truly believe everyone should be adjusted "from the cradle to the grave." It has certainly worked with my family so far.
I grew up the youngest of eight kids (6 boys), so I learned to defend myself early (a survival mechanism). I grew up loving sports and have been a lifelong Steelers and Penguins fan (I grew up near Pittsburgh). I met my wife Constance in Sumter and have been married since 1995. We have 3 beautiful kids, Erin Elizabeth (9), Ryan (8), and Evan (5). When I'm not working, I can usually be found at a ball field somewhere coaching one of them in soccer, baseball, or basketball. It can be a little crazy, but fun. The kids have never been vaccinated (ask me sometime and we'll talk) and barely know what a doctor's office looks like (except Daddy's). They've been getting adjusted since the day they were born and have been extremely healthy, smart kids--I like to think that Chiropractic, breastfeeding and a healthy lifestyle have something to do with it, but maybe we're just blessed.
